Summary of Terms
A fire escape is a special kind of emergency exit, usually mounted to the outside of a building or inside, separate from the main areas of the building.
Tread is the part of the stairway that is stepped on.
Riser is the vertical portion between each tread on the stair. This may be missing for an "open" stair effect.
Stringer, Stringer board or sometimes just String is the structural member that supports the treads and risers.
Balustrade is the system of railings and balusters that prevents people from falling over the edge.
